Texas AgriLife Extension offers post-hurricane livestock carcass disposal advice

COLLEGE STATION – Texas livestock producers suffering animal losses because of Hurricane Ike need to make sure they follow protocol when disposing of carcasses, said two Texas AgriLife Extension Service engineers and other state officials.

The Texas Animal Health Commission is conducting ground and aerial surveys of the storm’s aftermath, but hundreds of head of livestock are expected to be reported dead in the wake of Hurricane Ike. The searches are focusing on the southern parts of Chambers and Jefferson counties, where the hurricane’s storm surge flooded thousands of acres of ranch land. more

Hurricane IKE Update: September 15

Hurricane Ike– September 15, 2008


Animal response to Hurricane Ike continues to be a team effort, as the issues are much larger than the resources of any one agency or association. The TAHC statewide has worked with the livestock industry to establish sites for emergency shelters, and with local governments, agencies and associations to develop animal issues committees.


+ The Texas Animal Health Commission continues is supporting the disaster district committees in the affected area with persons who have animal and livestock expertise. The agency has established a small area command in the Austin headquarters, and is one 30+ agencies in the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management. TSCRA Sends Special Rangers, Supplies to Ike-Ravaged Counties

FORT WORTH, Sept. 15, 2008 – Members of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) special ranger force are converging in southeast Texas to aid cattle raisers in the Gulf Coast area highly impacted by Hurricane Ike over the weekend. “We are glad the federal agencies, such as FEMA, are taking care of the human relief efforts. Our concern is for the ranchers and the cattle in that area and we are committed to providing help to the victims,” says TSCRA President Jon Means, Van Horn.


TSCRA efforts began last Friday before Hurricane Ike made landfall when TSCRA members were asked for help with vacant pastures and available feedstuffs. more

Teasa Nauta Honored with the Junior Angus Bronze & Silver Pins

Teasa Nauta, Douglas, Wyo., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver Awards.


Teasa is the 19-year-old daughter of Rene’ Nauta and graduated from Douglas High School in May 2008. She is active in the Wyoming Junior Angus Association, where she’s served as secretary and president. Teasa has represented the state as their queen and the members selected her to be their voice as a voting delegate to the NJAA Annual Meeting at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) for two consecutive years. She has participated in the quiz bowl and extemporaneous speaking contests at the NJAS. Teasa has shown her Angus cattle and participated in showmanship at several shows on the local, state and national levels. Teasa has attended the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development Conference. She joined the NJAA in 2004. more

September 15, 2008. - Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire one hundred percent of U.S.-based business information services provider, DTN Holding Company, Inc. (DTN), headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The acquisition represents an all cash purchase of DTN for a total enterprise value of $445 million U.S. dollars (approx. 310 million Euros), to be financed through a combination of fully funded senior indebtedness and the issuance of common equity. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2008 and is subject to customary regulatory and shareholder approvals. more
