Yellow Tail Wine Donates $100,000 To HSUS
Sip no more, my friends. Yellow Tail Wine recently donated $100,000 to the Humane Society of the U.S. Whether or not you have tried their wine selections before, this company is teaming up with HSUS in a “Tail for Tails” campaign, and there is a group of folks already taking action through online resources. Typically, when I hear news like this, I tell myself to never give a dime to that company again. As a result, I have a long list of restaurants, brands and entertainers I won’t support: North Face, Sonic, Chipotle, Jack in the Box, Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Brad Pitt, and the list goes on. Today, I have added Yellow Tail, but simply turning my back on this company isn’t going to cut it anymore. It’s time for all of us to take action and tell Yellow Tail what we think. This is a great opportunity to slow HSUS in its tracks.
From HSUS: So much of what The HSUS does every day involves confronting cruelty to animals. But a significant part of our mission is also to encourage people to celebrate the animals in their lives. And who knows more about celebration than a company that makes great wine? That’s why the HSUS has paired with [yellow tail] for the “tails for tails” program. Through the end of March, you’ll see special [yellow tail] displays bearing The HSUS name and logo in stores across the country.
So, here is what I need all of you to do. First, become a fan of Yellow Tail on Facebook. Next, write a message on their wall about your disapproval of their partnership with HSUS. That’s all you need to do. Already, a huge number of farmers and ranchers have shared this message with Yellow Tail, and the company quickly responded with this, “Hi all, lots of conversation here today – we’re listening. Check back soon, as we’ll be announcing news shortly on our Tails for Tails program.”
They are paying attention, folks! It will be interesting to see what they do next as a result of this massive response from agriculture standing up against their partnership with HSUS, an organization with a main mission to abolish meat, dairy and eggs from the American diet, while putting farmers and ranchers out of business. Stay tuned for further updates.

I’ve left my message! Thanks Amanda.

Amanda! I heard about this yesterday and immediately posted against their actions on my personal facebook. Never thought to check out theirs! So glad you mentioned it!
Also, I’ve never been prouder reading down through so many statements supporting American Agriculture. Some times it feels like a war we’re battling alone, but there are so people in our troops. So uplifting!

Amanda, I just left the site of Yellow Tail and I was so proud to see so many comments telling them what a bad decision they made donating to HSUS. I see hope in our future!
I left my comment as well. I encourage everyone to do the same!

Good job Amanda, keep up the good work.
February 4th, 2010 at 1:15 pm
I was amazed! Everything on Yellow Tail’s wall is a comment against their HSUS connection. This new “fan” left his comment, as well.
Thanks for the lead, Amanda.

Perhaps both sides should be presented:
So much of what The HSUS does every day involves confronting cruelty to animals.
Through “tails for tails,” [yellow tail] is donating $100,000 to support us and our programs to help animals, including our Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest. What better way to celebrate your own pet than by sharing your animal companion’s photo. You can enter through February 26, 2010, 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Telling only part of the story …………is almost like saying don’t donate to Haiti, because it’s so close to Cuba.

Nita– How exactly does HSUS celebrate animals? I know it’s there mission, but I’m not sure how slandering the dairy industry (among others) on the abc nightly news is celebrating. Where are these celebrations?
Plus, if we continue to stand back while HSUS pushes legislation through in all 50 states, animal production agriculture will no longer be able support itsself. When that happens, who is going to ensure that animals are treated humanely in countries like Mexico and in South America. People aren’t going to stop eating meats, cheeses, and dairy products. So, what happens then? Let’s add that to our abundant list of items that are being imported. That’s going to be a delicious steak when it flys from Australia, enjoy breathing that polluted air from the plane too!
February 4th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
Nita, you are the one telling only part of the story. I don’t think anyone would argue against supporting shelter animals and pets, but “the other side” of HSUS is trying to stomp out animal agriculture in this country. No one here is letting that slide.
Thanks for the great work Amanda! I left my comment on [yellow tail]’s FB page as well.
February 4th, 2010 at 3:18 pm
I left my message! I am interested in finding a list of businesses, products, and celebrities that support HSUS and PETA, but it is difficult to find a complete list. Do you have a suggestion or link where I can find one. I think it would be interesting to see what effect the ag community could have be responding to other companies choices to support HSUS through social media comments. Would the effort be noticed quickly as in the case of Yellow Tail?
February 4th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
Thank you for the “heads up”. I left yellow tail a message!
February 4th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
Im afraid Nita is as mislead as the other thousands of people who donate to HSUS. She just isnt seeing their real face. Neither can she make us see what is not there.
One thing is evident though…HSUS has done a real number on Nita!
February 4th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Amanda, I think you are going a little too far with this one. Become a fan on their Facebook page and write a message of disapproval? I understand that HSUS can be misleading in their cause but you only point out the negatives and not the good that they have done for hundreds and thousands of animals. Not supporting a company because they donate money is absurd.

Amanda,
I learned about Yellow Tail’s commitment and immediately sent them the following message:
Until you change your policy towards HSUS, I have drank my last Yellow Tail wine. We support Animal welfare, but not the hidden agenda of HSUS. They have never ran a shelter, but yet they run those ads with sick dogs and kittens misleading people to think their membership supports animal care. They are anti meat, pro vegan, anti hunting and they apparently fooled your company into thinking your donation is a good thing. It’s a shame, I purchased my first case of your wine almost three years ago as a gift at the urging of my local liquor store. I found it very accepted by those I sent it to, I continued to purchase as party and Christmas gifts and now I must find a different brand and to tell my local store of my displeasure. I assume your owners/management are vegans, pro animal rights and anti animal welfare. If they don’t know the difference, ask and I will point them in the right direction. Our membership/ mailing list is 15,000.

Okay, Nita and Tracie, lets give HSUS their due. According to their 2008 990 tax form they have spent about 1.5% of their income on direct support for animals. If they continue to use their revenue as they have in the past then $1500 of the $100,000 that Yellow Tail Wine gave HSUS will go to support of animals. Now if $1500 would have been given to 66 local humane societies across the country Yellow Tail could have increased their effectiveness by 6,600% and still have $1,000 left over. You can tell by how they use their money that animal welfare is not their true mission. Maybe Yellow Tail’s purpose is to buy advertisements instead of helping animals. If they don’t receive enough negative responses then they may have made a good purchase for the money.

We left our facebook message denouncing yellow tail’s affiliation with HSUS. Thanks for the heads up!

In responding to Tracie Ann’s comment, Amanda and all the rest we have not gone to far by using todays technology to respond to comment or issues using face book or any other communication source. A few years ago it was magazines and TV segments that spread the news. Before that it was newpapers and radio.
Tracie with all respect, tell me with proof what HSUS has done without pushing issues that force other people to follow. I have no problem if people want to protect animals or be vegetarians but when they force their agenda on me by way of using funds to advertise and “buy” votes something is very wrong. It would be like me moving to the city and demanding that all traffic, parties, and lights be over and off by 10pm or your violating my rights. After all, with the exception of few times during the year the country is relatively quiet and dark. If HSUS wants to help strays in the cities by all means go for it but they are not stopping there Tracie, they are the ones going to far by making comments and and exteme videos of farm animals without giving both sides of the story.
It’s people like Amanda who helps us be aware of those extreme issues so that we can respond using todays media technology so thanks again Amanda and I look forward to Tracie’s response.

Everyone has their own opinion, I was just stating mine. I personally thing that HSUS is great because I have volunteered for them before. I have never given them money because I thinking that donating my time would be more valuable and I know what it’s going for.
And yes, I think you’re acting like mindless teenagers by going on their facebook page to complain about Yellow Tail donating money to HSUS. You don’t like it? Well, be an adult about it and write a sophisticated letter to the organization expressing your opinion. It probably won’t change things but at least you’ll get Yellow Tail thinking about their actions in the future. I just think it’s a more professional way to go about things instead of bashing them, publicly, on their facebook page.
If you can’t tell by now, I’m a vegetarian and animal rights activist. I’ve never tried to push my views on anyone because I don’t see the need in that. People will have their own beliefs and standards and I think that slaughtering animals for food can be one of them. I don’t like the way that commercial slaughterhouses treat animals before they end their life and I especially don’t like their living conditions. So, I choose not to eat meat. I don’t go as far as to being vegan but I do buy local, organic dairy products so I know the farm or ranch and know their standards. I buy meat for my husband and do the same as well. I enjoy supporting my local farmers by buying their products and but I believe I get more out of the deal because I know where everything is coming from.
So, I guess that’s enough of my ranting. Like I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion so that was just mine.

I tried Yellow Tail wine once, didn’t like it. I won’t be giving it a second chance now for sure.
February 5th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
Tracie, thank you for responding back. I do respect your opinion and am glad you have given it. I also appreciate that fact that you do buy local produce from someone you trust…that is good for both parties involved.
What exactly did you do as volunteer work for HUS? You see, my boy really loves cats and my wife got him a subscription to a magazine called ‘Cat Fancy’ and ever since he has been receiving mail from HSUS trying to get donations and showing horrible pictures and stories of not only pets, but farm animals. In their propaganda is comments how bad farm animals is treated but nothing about people who set an example of taking good care of their pets and farm animals. My son goes with me to feed the cows and bottled feed the baby calves. My family, including my son, tease me about making pets out of the mamma cows and that I would worry about them more than about my wife. I’m not bragging but this is what my family knows about taking care of farm animals, not the crap that HSUS continues to send.
I truly believe and this blog has shown it over and over again that most farmers take care of their animals in the best way posssible …. as for slaughter house maybe HSUS needs to be more specific instead of broad statements bashing the farmer.
Maybe HSUS needs to write and post comments at how Amanda Nolz and her family work so hard during the blizzards to take care of their livestock 24/7. That’s not easy you know when most Americans are probably inside where it’s warm and restful.
I will dissagree with you though, that I believe it is important to use the latest technology, even Facebook, to let a corporation or our government know what people are thinking.
Thank you again for expressing your opinion and you will never hear me bash anyone chosing to be a vege and forcing them to eat meat - I would just hope that good livestock farmers would be given the same respect. So far HSUS has failed in that catorgory.

There are a lot of well-meaning people in this world and a lot of them have been led to believe that HSUS is an organization that helps abused animals. They bombard innocent people with pictures of abused and starved animals and draw them into their web of deceit. In reading the comments on this blog and the Yellow Tail Facebook page, I feel better about our situation in farming and ranching. The American people are not stupid! That much is evident. Of course there are always ways to improve on what we do, but the American people WANT sustainable agriculture.
This incident with Yellow Tail is only the tip of the iceberg. There are lots more to be exposed. Blogs such as this one are providing a service to all Americans, exposing things that otherwise may never have been heard about. I pray it continues!
February 9th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
I love it! The wine folks did not realize that farmers have access to the Internet I guess. They and the HSUS are finding out that when farmers have a vehicle (blogs, twitter, etc.) for their voice - look out.
My wife said she used to like their wine, no more.

Amanda,
Thanks for the information. I really need to know why Sonic is on your list. I have grown up in the business for 30 years. My family has owned over 50 restaurants and caring on the family tradition I now have ownership in 7. If corporate is doing something I am unaware of, I would really like to know. We work with people on the corporate level weekly and I am not beyond bringing up something like this to them and finding out what is going on. We have a cattle farm and are very supportive of all that stands for, just last week my husband was elected President for the Middle TN Beef Producers. I really need to know why Sonic is on your list. I will be furious to find out if they are giving to an organization we are against. PLEASE! Thanks for your help and information!
