“Even Animal Activists Should Be Thanking Farmers”
As I research and explore this so-called “war” that animal rights activists have declared against animal agriculture, I ran across an interesting article in the California Farmer titled, “Even Animal Activists Should Be Thanking Farmers,” written by Josh Flint. When people thank farmers and ranchers for the work they do, Flint examines the true meaning behind this sentiment, even declaring that HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle should send his appreciation to farmers and ranchers. This is a different twist on the debate, and I think it’s one worth sharing. Check it out.
I would like to say thank you for my free time and the ability to explore a career in journalism. Too often folks get hung up on the hum ho “thank you for my food” message without realizing what that means. In Noel Kingsbury’s new book Hybrid: The History of Science and Plant Breeding, the farmer’s contribution is spelled out in a concise manner. According to the book, it takes 20 square kilometers (4,942 acres) to support one hunter/gatherer. If the same land area were farmed, it would support 6,000 people.
This means the farmer’s contribution to society has allowed us the time to pursue other career options. Yes, even you, Wayne Pacelle. As the CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, Pacelle spends his days trying to abolish animal agriculture. Even as he spends his time in this manner, he should be thanking farmers that he’s able to do so. If he had to find his own berries and leaves, not much time would be left for working against the so-called “factory farms.”

More need education reguarding exactly what HSUS and other animal rights organizations truly are. Those of us who are involved in raising animals to eat are animal welfarest. We know we have to produce a healthy, happy animal. With that, is the death of the animal, which it appears that HSUS in their abolotionist beliefs believe this is cruelty. We as farmers know this is part of the cycle of farming in our food animals and in the cycle of life we live and see every day. I can say that as some of my chickens heads were bitten off by a racoon….but realize it is the cycle and a predator is a predator and again the cycle of life and all animals have predators. Unfortunately that is the way I view HSUS and other animal rights organizations, as predators for a social movement, at most representing 10 percent of the public beliefs. HSUS has perpetuated the lies to our government officials but started with the public and school children, lawyers and vet school students many years ago - how, with visual sympathy and use of these techniques and seeing th
is over and over for people to feel for an animal, how can it not have an affect?
Second, they have control of the media. If something is anti HSUS appears on the news, or in a newspaper that “Wayne” does not like it either disappears or there is a retraction. All social movements use emotion and they the media and this amounts to propaganda. It is too bad that our goverment officials and the public have believed this hogwash! That needs to stop. Farmers, dog owners, mink farms and everyone else who is involved with animals needs to stand up and demand their story be told. We know, and HSUS lies, lies, lies! If not there will not only be meatless mondays at schools but meatless meals everywhere - Monday through Saturday, not to mention, little Billy Bob may never know the joys of owning a dog or two if he so chooses. It is about rights and choice! Your rights are being erradicated, and that is the truth. Is it not true that America represents many types of freedoms of our forefathers who were fleeing from one persecution or the other - what happened?
