My Favorite Time of Year: Fall Roundup
As summer fades into the orange-glow of fall, cattlemen across the country are busy rounding up their cattle for weaning time. It’s my favorite time of year; the leaves are changing and fluttering to the ground, harvest has begun and combine lights twinkle in the fields long after the sun has kissed the horizon, the air is crisp and fresh, football season has kicked off and it’s time to measure up the calf crop! This weekend, we will be weaning calves at home, and I’m excited to get the calves in the feed yards again. It’s that time of year to weigh and work the calves, and we will be measuring their performance, figuring out which cows are getting the job done in the pastures. Of every stage in the cow/calf sector chain, this is, by far, my favorite time of year.
