HSUS pushing McDonald’s for cage-free eggs, PETA’s euthanasia policy

mama-cow.JPGIt’s not a secret that PETA and HSUS are no friends to farmers and ranchers. Instead of supporting food producers that dedicate their lives to feeding the world, they are driven to make our jobs as difficult as possible in order to eventually push us all out of business. While they continue to make gains in their efforts, I feel there are ways we can slow them down. By keeping in close communication with our representatives and senators, educating the media and keeping in close contact with our consumers, we can work together to tell our side of the story. However, we first have to know what these animal rights activists are up to. I have included a few articles today worth discussing, and I’m anxious to hear your thoughts on our best course of action.

Positive media coverage from Food Network and ESPN

barn-2.jpgI had a fun weekend celebrating agriculture at the South Dakota State University’s 86th Little International. 1,700 students competed in judging contests, livestock shows and showmanship events. It was a true gathering of agriculture’s finest, and I’m proud to have been able to participate in Little “I” throughout my years at the university. Because the event was such a success, I’m feeling incredibly optimistic about the agriculture industry today. A quick scan through recent headlines indicates that several media sources are pretty optimistic about animal agriculture, as well.

Small Victories

img_0810.JPGI often feel like the messenger of bad news as I’m constantly blogging about the activities of animal rights activists, the articles written about dodgy food studies, or the latest documentary that aims to make ranchers look like the bad guys. Without a doubt, these headlines can get to be a little overwhelming, especially if you’re like me and want to take immediate action against these issues. However, to end this week’s blog entries, I thought I would focus on the positive and fill you in on a few small victories for agriculture.

Yahoo, MSN focus on reducing meat intake

I regularly subscribe to many news outlets for my daily dose of articles. In addition to keeping up on agricultural, local and national news, I also like to read the daily articles found at online news sources like Yahoo and MSN. This keeps my mind fresh and my ears open to the growing trends and opinions of our nation’s consumers and journalists. Yesterday, I was really disappointed to see both MSN and Yahoo feature articles about reducing meat consumption to help the environment, save money and improve health. They both talk about a recent study that links red meat with early mortality. I hate for these articles about dodgy studies to become the mainstream thoughts of America. Is it fair to blame all health problems on one food source alone? I’m sick and tired of taking the fall for the dietary and environmental issues facing the world, and I want to hear your thoughts on this topic. Take a look at the following articles, and let me know what you think!

HSUS plots to vote Underwood in as ACMA Entertainer of the Year

george-strait-2.jpg Yesterday, was informed of the most recent HSUS plot, and I thought I would fill you in on this scandal, as well. Last week, I wrote about endorsing Rachael Ray as an outstanding advocate for the beef industry. I believe we need to thank the celebrities that support our industry, and today, I have provided a perfect opportunity to do just that. Now is your chance to stand up against HSUS and Carrie Underwood and endorse a country singer The Academy of Country Music Awards that holds the same values that we do. If the following message moves you to take action, head to and vote for PRCA member and team roper, George Strait! It only takes a minute to register, but that minute will be well spent fighting HSUS and their sneaky schemes!

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the most radical animal “rights” and anti-hunting organization in the country, has been quietly trying to get Carrie Underwood voted Entertainer of the Year via the Academy of Country Music. The problem is, a large percentage of country music fans are also gun owners and hunters who do not like Carrie Underwood’s active support for HSUS. And HSUS knows it.

carrie-underwood-newest-member-of-grand-ole-opry.jpgUnderwood and American Idol have already listed HSUS as a beneficiary of the proceeds of one of her songs and now HSUS is enlisting their radical animal rights supporters to vote for her in the Entertainer of the Year contest. But they are trying to keep it quiet. In an e-mail sent out to supporters by Kathy Bauch, the HSUS Senior Director for Corporate Relations & Promotions, she asked people to vote for Underwood, but added, “Feel free to distribute this to friends and family, but please don’t post to lists, twitter, etc.–anything that would identify that HSUS is urging people to vote for her, or it could just breathe life into the opposition.”

Oops, too late! Perhaps someone should tell the folks at HSUS that e-mails are not exactly the most secure way of communicating their “secret” agendas. Please share this with every meat-eating, freedom loving American you know and then VOTE!!!

Meat-In Day at PSU

patty.jpgNearly every week I have conversations with many of you about the actions we need to take to help spread the word about beef cattle production to our consumers. Over the years, I have met countless individuals that have taken these conversations to heart, dedicating their time and talents to sharing our stories. One of my friends and a 2007 National Beef Ambassador, Chris Molinaro, is doing just that, and she has established a lasting tradition on behalf of the beef industry at Pennsylvania State University (PSU).

Cheers to beef supporter, Rachael Ray

100_ray.jpgIt’s easy to get down about the headlines that plague our daily lives: another celebrity becomes a vegan, anti-agriculture legislation is introduced, the media unfairly portrays ranchers in a bad light, the economy continues to plummit, more producers are exiting the industry and food prices continue to rise, without adding extra dollars in ranchers’ pockets. It’s hard to stay optimistic in challenging times, but I firmly believe it’s good to always try to think on the bright side. In response to the activities of agriculture’s enemies like Carrie Underwood and Oprah, I have found a celebrity that is worthy of praise. And, she may just be another great spokesperson for the beef industry.

Alert: False Johns Hopkins Cancer Update

Like many e-rumors, this one has been circulating for awhile. A cancer update that warns readers about the evils of meat and dairy in the diet and how these foods lead to cancer is the topic of the email. This lenghty email about cancer and nutrition is said to have been published by the famous Johns Hopkins University. The suggestions in the email appear to have come from this reputable insitution. Despite the fact that Johns Hopkins University said in a public statement that they neither published the document or endorse it, this e-rumor is still making gains through the inboxes of our nation’s consumers, and I think it’s time we address it. Although this e-rumor, titled, “Johns Hopkins Cancer Update,” doesn’t provide substantial scientific evidence to back its claims, apparently, individuals are still buying into these lifestyle change suggestions. I have been sent this multiple times from cattle producers that were referred to this email by believers, and I want you all to be aware that it’s out there. Let’s start working to correct these harmful rumors that continue to plague our industry! I hate to reprint this, but I here it goes…

Running for Beef

bm_401.jpgIt’s official: my sister, Courtney, and I just signed up for the 40th Annual Brookings Marathon on May 16. It’s time to get in shape, and fast, as we gear up to run 13.1 miles. While the task seems daunting, I have several friends that have tackled similar races, including BEEF’s Managing Editor, Alaina Burt, NCBA’s Daren Williams and 2007 National Beef Ambassador, Chris Molinaro.

Agriculture and the Environment

white-tail.JPGI took an impromptu “Spring Break trip” to the Black Hills in Western South Dakota at the end of last week, and I spent a few days enjoying the scenic beauty of the Badlands, Custer State Park, Spearfish Canyon, Black Hills National Forest and notable landmarks, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Bear Butte and Roughlock Falls. (If you’re looking for a summer vacation spot, South Dakota is the place to be!) Despite the snow-packed hills, I didn’t let the weather interfere with my mini-vacation, and I filled my days with hiking through the many trails. While on my nature walks, I discovered a host of wild animals including: mule deer, white-tail deer, bighorn sheep, bison and pronghorn antelope. I noticed that the deer and antelope that were grazing in the agriculture fields appeared much healthier than the ones in the national parks. It occurred to me that this was an obvious example of how ranchers are stewards of the land.
