Halloween: Cowboy Style
Everyone loves Halloween. Harvest is nearing completion (unless you can’t get in the fields because of all the rain like all my neighbors), the calves are weaned, healthy and eating like wolves in the feed yard, and for many, a big check will soon come your way when you market those calves and perhaps your cull cows. Maybe you aren’t planning your Halloween costume (I’m going to be a pumpkin, by the way), but you might be eating all the candy that you bought for those little trick-or-treaters. And, speaking of pumpkins and the Halloween spirit, I have decided that, through this blog, I have some very interesting friends.
I have met so many wonderful people because of this blog, and it’s only in its beginning stages. First, I have the Cosmo bachelor friend, then I have the friend that has triplet calves, I have my ambassador friends, and I have my aged with wisdom friends. I have my BEEF Magazine staff member friends, my presidential election savvy friends, and my friends that dislike Oprah. And in the spirit of the season, I have friends that do this…

Loved the last two blogs on beef daily! They are fun ways to promote beef and I appreciate the passion of youth. Thanks for bringing these promotional events to our attention!

What a great idea you had inviting other cattlemen and women to comment on the industry. We have a herd of 1200 cows and are culling cows this year and wondering which way we should go with our calves. We’ve sold last years spring calves and have fall calves to deal with. An ever increasing problem is where do you put them when the market takes a dive? Urban development and vinticulture have taken so much of our pastureland and irrigateable land that it is hard to find pasture to put your cows on. You can’t afford to buy the land so you must find leaseable land because the prices are so high for ranch land that they don’t pencil out for the cowman.
I would like to hear from other cattle ranches to find out what they are doing to keep their heads above the water.

Amanda…Good to have you aboard. It is great to get a youngster’s take on a business that is not only my livelihood, but my lifestyle, and I suppose my whole life, when you get down to it. We old cowboys must be receptive to new thoughts and methods if we are to survive and keep the ranch together for another generation and I applaud the Beef Mag folks for the innovation they have shown in getting timely information to the dusty ‘ol boys riding drag. I wish you the best of luck in your new endeavor.

I agree with Perry, your youth and very creative ideas (punkins) are needed and welcomed in our fast changing industry today.
Keep up the good work, Did you give out Beef Jerky for treats??
Karen, can you tell me what vinticulture is? Hobby farming?

Just trying to get involved in receiving as much information as I can about the beef industry. I ranch in southeastern N.M. Would like to hear from as many of you as have time to reply. Looks like only a few reply, hope more are reading. I have a lot of questions and a few answers. I will respond, in some form or fashion, as soon as I can.
