Pay Attention to Consumers
Do you ever really think about the people purchasing your beef? Sometimes, it’s really easy to forget about our consumers in the grocery stores when we are busy watching the markets and feeding cattle. Let’s face it…if they aren’t buying beef, we can’t make any money.
Last week, my hometown’s locally owned grocery store hosted a meat sale for our city’s consumers. (Perfect timing for consumers with tighter pockets during our nation’s economic meltdown.)
Our ranching friend drove into town and purchased a few pork loins at the sale to feed to his pheasant hunters that will be visiting during season opener next weekend. He said to me, “You know, I’m so proud of this grocery store for helping the consumers and keeping meat at the center of the dinner table. Someone should write a letter to the editor about it.”
To have one of the local ranchers say something like that shows me that there truly is a desire for cattlemen to have their voices heard to help increase the demand for beef. I guess that’s where this blog comes in. I will do anything to make a difference for this beef industry, and I think this blog is the perfect ticket for sounding off your concerns and voicing your opinions on what we can do as producers. So hop on that soapbox of yours that I know you use at your local elevator, and let me know what’s going on with your operation. Are you a cow/calf operator, a stocker/feeder, a packer, a retailer or an allied industry member? Talk to me. Tell me what your end of the world looks like. I’m all ears.

I am a rancher that sells bulls for breeding stock. Interest in our bulls has been good this fall, but I’m not sure what will happen with the stockmarket so low. Hopefully, farmers and ranchers will still need some good quality bulls for breeding stock. I really enjoy your blog!

My family sells bulls for breeding stock as well. Although we expected it to be a tough year for bull sales this year, we have been receiving a lot of phone calls about the bull prospects already this year. I agree that things could get interesting this spring when customers have to pull out the checkbook and pay for those bulls that they are interested in. Are you a purebred breeder? Where are you located? I hope that you see a successful year of bull sales, Leroy. Best wishes!
