It’s Chore Time
Look at ‘em all…grazing in the pasture last Friday before we moved them all home for weaning. When the cowherd is in the pasture, it means chores consist of checking fence, taking pasture tours, spraying for flies on occasion and keeping the creep feeder full.
Yes, last Saturday certainly stole away this summertime bliss.
Now the calves are weaned and need great attention, the cows want their babies back and they demand more hay, and the chores are never ending. And, boy am I happy to be a weekend rancher! Get the chores done, Dad! I gotta get to class!

Your last two articles have hit very close to home for me. My husband gets very excited and nervous for weaning day. Excited to see all the calves together and check on their weaning weights. Nervous about everything going smoothly without any major problems. Myself, I get a little nervous for different reasons. I have made several trips to the emergency on weaning day. One year I stepped in a hole and broke my ankle. Another year I had two calves hit the gate running before I could get it shut. I got smacked hard in the face, broke my glasses and needed stitches above my eye. I am happy to report that weaning day went smoothly. Calves weighed heavy and no injuries to report. I have enjoyed reading your blog so far. Nice pictures. Keep up the good work!!!
